The Health Sciences Library has recently released “Databases/360 Search (Federated or Single
Search System)”, a new database list and search system. In addition to
providing both a subject and alphabetical list of our bibliographic and/or
full-text databases, this new service has improved additional capabilities and
features. There is now the capability to perform “federated searches” (i.e., combined simultaneous searches of more
than one database at the same time) for many databases, and the capability to
access full-text articles via Linkout
from many of these federated databases.
On the database list, those with checkboxes in front of the
title are federated. Those without checkboxes are not federated and cannot be
searched simultaneously with other databases, but may be searched individually.
For a brief introduction to what 360
Search/Federated Search is, how it works, or how to interpret search
results click on “Search tips” on the right next to “Advanced Search” or click
here to go directly to the Search tips page.
The Linkout feature
provides full-text access for many articles from within a database or via the
search results, and is available for most of the federated databases (whether
searched individually or in combination). How does it work? After a search,
from the search results, there may be full-text access at the database site by
clicking on the article title. If no full-text is found in the database, on the
search results page, click on “More full-text options” below the article’s
title. This will take you to the library’s results page where access to
full-text may be available from one or more other databases. There will also be
additional information about where to look for or obtain the article including
Interlibrary Loan.
