It is a University policy that Stony Brook University affiliated persons (faculty, staff, students, guests) carry their Stony Brook ID cards with them at all times while in the University. Only authorized users are allowed to use the Learning Center facilities.
Food & Drink
Please observe the Food & Drink Policy at all times. Lab personnel are instructed to strictly enforce this policy – no exceptions.
Computer Accounts
Each user of the Barry S. Coller Learning Center must use their own computer username and password to log on to the computers in the learning center and classrooms.
Only current faculty, staff, and students will be given a computer account. Faculty and staff who are considered a part of private companies (eg. ARAMARK, Parking staff, TFCU, etc.) are not eligible for a computer account.
Total Disk Quota for Lab Accounts is 1 GigaByte
Accounts can be requested at the Technical Assistance desk located inside the Learning Center.
Users with computer accounts may save their work files in their personal network home directory (U: drive) or may save work to their own floppy disk or zip disk. Users are not able to save to the local disk drives or the windows desktop.
Personal storage spaces on the network (U: drive) are backed up regularly. However, we are not our responsible for possible loss of data. Important data should be backed on personal floppy disks or zip disks.
Don’t share computer accounts with anyone.
Make sure to always log off from your computer account.
If any of the policies of Barry S. Coller Learning Center are violated, the computer account will be disabled without prior notice. Such action is necessary to maintain availability, security, and integrity of operations for other users of its resource.
Software Issues
No applications (executables) are to be installed or your account will be disabled.
For more information on software installation issues and file management, please refer to the Software Install Policy.
Computer Equipment
All computers, printers, and associated equipment are “State Property” for education purposes.
Tampering with any equipment is prohibited as this may result in damage.
Be aware of which drives you insert a floppy or zip disk to prevent damage to the disk and/or computer.
Computers and monitors are not to be repositioned.
Barry S. Coller Learning Center is not responsible for damages to any removable disks.
Misuse and Abuse of Resources
The Learning Center facilities are primarily for educational computing purposes.
Attempting to subvert network security, to impair functionality of the network, or to bypass restrictions set by the administrators is prohibited. Assisting others in violating these rules by sharing information or passwords, by loading unauthorized software onto public computers and overloading of network capacity are also considered unacceptable behavior. It is the responsibility of the user to become familiar with any additional specific policies posted by the administrator of the lab prior to using its computer resources.
Using any of the resources for personal profit, business transactions, using computers for gaming purposes, viewing pornography, and other misuse and abuse of resources is strictly prohibited.
Printing
Users are required to pay for printing. There is a charge of ten cents per page. All printing will be double-sided by default, making the charge five cents per side when printing multiple pages.
There are no refunds for damaged or lost print jobs, or for lost or damaged cards. There will be no cash transactions for printing.
To prevent an entire loss of a large print job and money, please print the job in sections. For instance, a 30 page print job should be split into 15 pages each by print 1-15, then 16-30. Ask the Technical Assistance desk if you need help doing this.
You must use your campus ID card or a Visitor Card (at the front entrance of the library). At the Card Value Center dispenser, money can be added to the cards which are located at the front entrance of the library and in Barry S. Coller Learning Center.
When printing, it is important to know which printer you are printing to and the name of your computer. Then, go to the Release Printing Stations (RPS) and release the print job. Instructions are available at near the RPS.
After printing, be sure that the printouts you have are only yours.
Be sure to check if you are printing single-sided or double-side to prevent the loss of money.
Tampering with any printers is prohibited as this may result in damage.
You are not allowed to use your own paper, labels, or envelopes.
Users are not permitted to open lab cabinets or supply closets. Please contact a consultant if you think supplies need to be replenished.
Quiet, Courtesy, and Professionalism
Whether you are in the public terminals area or in the Learning Center computer lab/classroom, you are still inside the library. Please refrain from talking loudly or extensively as well as making noise or playing music aloud as this may bother others who are trying to study or do their work on the computers. Let’s extend common courtesy to everyone. Additionally, please be professional in your words and actions. Lab personnel are here to assist you but do not always have immediate answers to your problems. They are also here to enforce rules and policies to ensure smooth operation of the Learning Center. If you have concerns, please speak with one of the staff members or send e-mail the HSL Help Desk
